The Title To Our Thriller
The title of the film plays a significant role in the success of the film. The title is very important as it's the very first thing the audience hear about and see. The title is the first piece of promotion aimed at the audience. Immediately the audience will make assumptions on its effectiveness, so it's key to get a good title and opening.
We have done some research on 'Top rated Thriller' Titles and have found that titles with 1-3 words are significantly more successful. This shows that short title's are predominately more effective. Therefore, our Thriller title will be short and sharp. Also it could be suggested that Title's with more words give the audience too much information. By using 1-2 words the audience is left curious to what the thrillers about. for example 'Jeepers Creepers' 'The Ring' and 'Hostage' don't give the whole story away, but leave the audience interested to what the films about. However, thrillers with longer titles such as 'The Last house On The Left' Lets the audience establish that the house will be a main factor in the film.
From this research our group will decide on a short thriller title as it's proven to be most successful as its short sharp and blunt. Below is the table showing popularity of the thrillers and their titles.
We have looked at a variety of thriller openings to make sure we know exactly what information is required at the start of the film, also it shows how professional directors use mise en scene, cinematography, editing and sound effectively. An excellent example is the opening sequence to 'The Dark Knight'. The very first thing we see is the company's name and logo, it's important for us to see this as we can establish who the film is made by. Also we now know we must include the company logo at the very beginning of the thriller. The scene begins with low key lighting of clouds forming into the shape of a bat. This indicates it's a dark film (a thriller) and it shows a different but effective approach on how we can incorporate a symbol to represent the film. Another opening to a thriller we watched was 'Black Swan', the first thing we see is the company's name and logo to show the audience immediately who the film is by. This sequence begins with a black screen where white words appear, this is effective as the colours are completely opposite, making them stand out. The first shots mention companies involved with the making in the film and then the title in capitals is shown. Again, creating a bold sharp statement. Also ambient sound is added in of a woman laughing this plays a cynical feel to the thriller as it contrasts the classical 'sweet' music which is already being played. This creates an atmospheric atmosphere and the footage of the film then begins.
This has been very effective research as now our group knows and understands what is included at the beginning of an effective thriller. We can use this gained information to help make our own title sequence to the best of our ability.
